Wallpaper* Unveils RB Arkitektur, with Sweden’s Architect of the Year, as One of the World’s Most Exciting New Architects

Wallpaper*, the international design magazine, has chosen RB Arkitektur for its Architects Directory: 101 of the world’s most exciting new architects.

Tony Chambers, Wallpaper* editor-in-chief, says: “Wallpaper* and its readers are passionate about architecture so launching this directory makes perfect sense. The directory emphasizes RB Arkitektur’s ambition to identify the uniqueness of each project through extensive analysis of each different programme. Such an approach allows for a variety of expressions and architectural solutions.

Inspiration

The site, area and locale are the greatest source of inspiration for Belatchew Lerdell, who says, ’My inspiration lies mainly in the zeitgeist.’ The architect is also inspired by other aspects of contemporary culture, especially fashion, contemporary art and photography.

Innovation

Acknowledging the importance of environmental and sustainable issues in the development of architecture, the practice is orientating its design towards incorporating all relevant technologies. Belatchew Lerdell also predicts that ’various aspects of globalisation will have an even greater impact on the way we live and the houses we build’.

RB Arkitektur is an architectural practice working in the field of contemporary and innovative architecture, and has attracted much attention in international media and has also been published in several architectural books.

RB Arkitektur was founded by Rahel Belatchew Lerdell, who was born in Ethiopia in 1969, and grew up in Uppsala, Sweden. After receiving a Masters Degree in Architecture from Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris, Rahel worked as an architect in Paris, Luxemburg and Tokyo. After a decade of working abroad, she returned to Sweden in the year of 2000.

Rahel Belatchew Lerdell was appointed Architect of the Year 2006/2007 by receiving ’The Great Design Award’ from Residence Magazine.
