Appointment to VIA Rail Canada Inc.

The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the appointment of Mr. Donald Mutch to the board of directors of VIA Rail Canada Inc. for a period of two years.

“I am pleased that Mr. Mutch has agreed to serve on the board of VIA Rail Canada Inc.,” said Minister Cannon. “VIA Rail provides a vital service to link our communities and I am confident that his experience in investment and capital markets will be great assets to the board.”

Mr. Mutch has over 30 years of experience in a number of investment, management and senior advisory roles. He holds a master of arts in economics from the University of Edinburgh and most recently, Mr. Mutch was responsible for managing Sun Life’s investment portfolio for the corporation’s Canadian operations. Previous to this, Mr. Mutch was the Bank of Montreal’s Senior Vice-President for Market Risk at Bancomer in Mexico City. His responsibilities included helping develop Bancomer’s asset liability management function and treasury position risk management. In 1995, Mr. Mutch was selected by the Canadian Bankers Association as the banking industry appointee to the Government of Canada’s Department of Finance. This position found him consulting with and advising government agencies such as the Bank of Canada, the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions, and the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation. All of these positions built upon Mr. Mutch’s earlier investment and senior management experience with the Bank of Montreal, and upon his trading experience with the Bank of Canada.

Mr. Mutch is also an active member of the volunteer community, serving in a variety of roles, such as Director and Vice-Chairman of the Niagara Pumphouse Visual Art Centre from 2005-2006; as Director of the Willowbank School of Restoration Arts from 2004-2005; as Director of the Glenn Gould Foundation from 2000-2004; as Director and Treasurer and Chairman of the Investment Committee for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation from 1992-1995; and as Director and advisory board member for the sports celebrity festival in aid of the Special Olympics from 1989 to 1995.

VIA Rail Canada Inc., a Crown corporation created in 1977, operates Canada’s national passenger rail service. The board of directors is responsible for overseeing the business activities and other affairs of the corporation.
