PPG Industries (PPG: NYSE) selected two outstanding vehicles to receive the “PPG Dream Car” awards at the 10th annual Goodguys PPG Nationals, July 13-15 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus. The two vehicles were a ’48 Ford Nash Coupe owned by Mitch and Karen Rhodes of Helena, Ohio, and a 1950 Chevy Hardtop owned by Larry Johnston of Greensburg, Pa.

Mitch Rhodes restored the rare Nash for his wife, Karen, putting hundreds of hours into completely revamping the vehicle. The paint scheme was created by Pee Wee’s Restoration of Fremont, Ohio, using Deltron 2000 Basecoat (DBC) by PPG in Sunset Red over Rose Metallic, and Gold Ash colors from the Vibrance Collection of custom finishes by PPG, topped with Deltron DC3000 Clear. Rhodes’s work has earned him numerous accolades, including the Goodguys’ “Big, Bad and Blown” award in 2000 for a ’54 Studebaker wearing Hot Licks colors from PPG.

Johnston performed all the mechanics and personally assembled his radically reshaped and restored ’50 Chevy Hardtop. Plisco Auto Body of East Pittsburgh, Pa., did the bodywork and executed the bright, two-tone finish using New Chianti Red and Lamborghini Orange colors formulated with the Global Refinish System by PPG. The Chevy was one of the “Great Eight” finalists for the 2006 Ridler Award, the Boyd Coddington Pro Pick at the Columbus Nationals, and a Custom Rod of the Year finalist at the 2007 Goodguys Heartland Nationals in Heartland, Iowa.

The two “PPG Dream Car” annual awards are given to one car in the pre-1949 street rod category and one 1949-and-later custom vehicle that best demonstrate outstanding use of color, design, gloss and execution of paint job.

The Goodguys Rod & Custom Association is the world’s largest rod and custom association, with nearly 70,000 members nationwide. The association produces more than 20 car shows and events annually, this year attracting more than 85,000 hot rod and street rod enthusiasts to the annual national show in Columbus.

PPG exhibits at the national and many regional Goodguys events, featuring the hot colors, unique pigments and special-effect finishes showcased in its line of Vibrance Collection custom finishes. PPG is the official paint supplier to the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association.
