One World Many Voices Volume Features Global Artists And New, Unusual or Classic Performances

WASHINGTON - While NPR is the destination for news, information and the arts for more than 26 million people, it’s also a gateway for music fans to discover new, unusual and classic music and performers not found anywhere else.

Listener demand for more of the kind of music used throughout NPR news and programming - as well as the sensibility behind the selections - sparked the first “I heard it on NPR” compilation CD, released in 2002. Now, after four more top-selling editions, NPR is launching the sixth volume of the popular collection on September 27, entitled “One World Many Voices.”

Previous “I heard it on NPR” CDs have creatively covered the breadth of popular music: the debut release featured jazz legends and newcomers, and subsequent editions explored unique American music genres, world music, blues and singer/songwriters performing in NPR’s Studio 4A. “This sixth CD returns to the global music theme but this time, also takes listeners on a journey through the local history and events that influenced the artists we’re showcasing,” said Barbara Sopato, E-Commerce Manager, NPR.

“I heard it on NPR: One World Many Voices” includes 13 songs from such globally-diverse artists as Emeline Michel, GreenJolly, Miriam Makeba and Patti Smith. The CD series is produced in partnership with Daedalus Books and Music and Boss Sounds.

NPR’s influence over adult music buyers has been acknowledged by the music industry and numerous consumer, business and trade media. A Billboard article named NPR as “the crucial destination” for record labels seeking to effectively reach adult audiences.

“I heard it on NPR: One World Many Voices” as well as the entire series of CDs are available at the NPR Shop, (888-NPR-DISC, shop.npr.org), through Daedalus Books & Music, (800-395-2665, www.salemusic.com) and at other select retail outlets.

The NPR Music brand extends through broadcast and satellite radio programming, original online content and merchandise. NPR’s news and information programming, including the weekday and weekend news magazines Morning Edition and All Things Considered, provide wide-ranging music segments, artist profiles and features - including recent exclusive radio interviews with Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan. Its broadcast programming slate also has the trend-setting contemporary music series World Café as well as performance series showcasing jazz, classical, opera, symphony and Celtic. NPR.org offers the All Songs Considered online-exclusive music program which, in turn, sparked a regular series of ASC live online-only concerts from top U.S. club venues featuring such acts as Wilco and David Gray. Fans can take NPR Music home from the NPR Shop, which offers a wide variety of compilation, themed and holiday CDs. Links to NPR’s on-air coverage of each musician featured on the new CD as well as translations of the lyrics for each song can be found at www.npr.org/ihearditonnpr starting September 27.
