News Advisory:

WHAT: American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) incoming President Bruce Cunningham, Md., will donate 2,000 safety helmets to students at Pershing Magnet Elementary School in Chicago during Plastic Surgery 2005, the ASPS annual scientific meeting. Students from Mayo, Robinson, and Price elementary schools will also receive helmets.

WHY: Bike riding is one of the most popular recreational sports among children in the United States -- and the leading cause of recreational sports injuries. Children accounted for an estimated 315,700 bicycle-related injuries; 72,500 skateboard- related injuries; and 44,500 non-powered scooter-related injuries in 2004.

Studies show that helmets can prevent 85 percent of serious head injuries and 65 percent of injuries to the mid- and upper face. Recreational sports injuries account for a significant part of reconstructive plastic surgery performed on children each year. Through its donation, the ASPS hopes to prevent these injuries and to encourage more children to wear helmets.

WHEN: Thursday, Sept. 22, 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

WHERE: Pershing Magnet Elementary School, 3113 South Rhodes, Chicago, Ill., 60616
