Donation targeted for trail construction through Southeast Austin

Austin, Texas -- September 20, 2005 --Spansion LLC, the Flash memory venture of AMD (NYSE: AMD) and Fujitsu Limited (TSE: 6702), today announced a cash contribution of $10,000 to the Austin Parks Foundation to help construct over 5.5 miles of trails through southeast Austin. When completed, the trails will wind along Country Club Creek and through adjacent neighborhoods from Roy Guerrero Colorado River Park to Mabel Davis Park.

“This project is a true community effort that will allow neighbors to work side-by-side to create a network of trails that can be used and enjoyed by southeast Austin residents for years to come,” said Randy Blair, vice president of Fab 25 at Spansion.

The idea for the project surfaced during the Country Club Creek neighborhood planning process in 2004 when local residents and City staff agreed that trails would be beneficial to the community. As neighbors began talking about the project, momentum began to build and the Country Club Creek Trails Alliance was formed. Volunteers and staff from the City of Austin inventoried the property along Country Club Creek to determine ownership of parcels as well as natural features and construction challenges. In 2004, the group began clean-up efforts in Colorado River Park in anticipation of trail development.

Guerrero-Colorado River Park currently has a 1.5 mile-long trail that links Kreig Fields to the Montopolis Sports Complex, and connects to the Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail. The proposed 5.5 miles of the Country Club Creek Trail will tie into this existing trail and incorporate several southeast Austin neighborhoods into the southeast Austin trail network.

“This is a beautiful area that is currently underserved in terms of developed parks and trails,” said Charlie McCabe, executive director of the Austin Parks Foundation. “This project is a step in the right direction.”

Plans include utilizing an existing hike and bike pathway along Pleasant Valley Road and bikeway extension that is currently under construction to Burleson Road, and building an extension to the Sunridge neighborhood and Spansion campus, located on East Oltorf. A leg of the trail will lead through the Burleson Heights neighborhood to Mabel Davis Park and Linder Elementary School. Future connections may extend south of Ben White Boulevard to other trails being developed.

Volunteers and City staff are working with property owners to secure easement rights for the trail, and seeking permissions and permits for the work. In early September, the CCCT Alliance steering committee formalized an agreement with the Austin Parks Foundation to serve as fiscal agent for the project and provide assistance to the group. Later this fall, the steering committee will organize volunteer work days to begin cleaning up and clearing the trail.
