BATON ROUGE, La., Sept. 16 -- CRC Health Group’s Baton Rouge Treatment Center, not damaged during Katrina, has opened its doors to the patients of New Orleans clinics no longer operating and is treating 300 displaced drug abuse victims, regardless of their ability to pay. “We are not turning any patients away,” Phil Herschman, president of CRC’s Opiate Treatment Program Division, stated.

“We have volunteers, nurses, and counselors from CRC clinics across the country who are flying in (at our expense) to help treat the influx of patients,” said Dr. Barry Karlin, chairman and CEO of CRC Health Group, the country’s largest substance abuse treatment provider, headquartered in Cupertino, Calif.

Carl Kelley, director of the Baton Rouge Treatment Center, stated, “We are working with the State Methadone Authority to try and identify staff from closed clinics to hire in order to better treat the new patients and help displaced workers. Because of the shortage of places to stay, existing Baton Rouge staff are offering volunteer staff the option of staying at their homes.”

Herschman added, “We have worked with suppliers (Mallinckrodt, VistaPharm, and San Diego reference Laboratory) to provide free medication and services to those patients who do not have an ability to pay. We are also working with the State to determine if there is a need for a mobile methadone services; if there is, we are prepared to offer that service.”

The Baton Rouge Treatment Center is at 11445 Reiger Road, Baton Rouge, LA 70809, tel. 225-932-9867. CRC National Resource Center’s phone number for admissions is 866-762-3766. CRC Health Group is in 21 states, with 87 facilities and over 2,500 employees, treating approximately 22,000 individuals daily. The organization provides a comprehensive continuum of care including residential, outpatient, behavioral, and online treatment and rehabilitation services.
