ITIL V3 Are you using IT(IL)?

How widespread is the use of ITIL at small- to medium-sized corporations. Do you know what ITIL is? Do you design your entire business around ITIL? Something in between? Does ITIL certification matter to you when hiring employees or consultants?

July 3, 2007 - ITIL is a very usable concept. It can help streamline systems management and end-user support. When designing a support delivery structure for any organisation, you would indeed use ITIL as a basis.

Having said that, ITIL can be over the top when implemented in full. In other words: take out bits and pieces of the concept and use those that are of interest for your organization.

For instance: it would be overkill to fully implement the change management procedure for a small company running only Microsoft Small Business Server and a few workstations. One doesn’t need such a procedure to maintain an overview of a system.

Processes/activities to always seriously consider are Service Desk, Incident Management, Problem Management and Asset Management (hard- and software). The bigger or more complex the organisation, the more useful a process driven implementation result is.

In other words: “Something in between”. And, certification would not matter in hiring staff. It might matter for hiring consultants/advisors, but that would depend on the reasons for hiring - do yo need ITIL related experience, and/or process related experience - that is the question you should ask.
