Nortel Unveils Advanced Sip Applications For Businesses And Consumers

WEBWIRE

CHICAGO – Businesses and consumers will worry less about which device or network to use thanks to Nortel’s* [NYSE/TSX: NT] SIP and IMS-ready applications. The offerings include Web Services, Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC), and Web Portal customization applications. These will help overcome the multi-device, multi-access challenges of the era of Hyperconnectivity where anything that can be connected will be connected to the network.
Nortel’s new and enhanced SIP applications allow carriers to deliver a more personalized communications experience to subscribers today, while also preparing their networks for IMS in the future. The applications can integrate multiple networks such as wireline, wireless or cable and IP-based communications – email, video, web-based services, instant messaging. These capabilities allow users to communicate and collaborate with greater ease, flexibility and efficiency.

“Consumers and businesses want access to their personal and work-related content from wherever they are and with any device,” said Alf Decardenas, general manager, Converged Multimedia Networks, Nortel. “Nortel’s new and enhanced SIP applications unleash a powerful, communications experience where users will worry less about which device is needed to access which network.”

Nortel’s new applications will also allow carriers to host Web Services that integrate their communication services onto a business’s web pages. The Web Services capabilities are being made available via Parlay X API’s, and include presence, messaging and click-to-connect.

“In the larger context of IT/telecom convergence, integrating or ‘mashing up’ the array of real-time capabilities afforded by SIP and IMS with existing business processes, is one of the most important new trends shaping the telecom industry today”, said Tom Valovic, director of NGN Infrastructure at IDC. “This new approach offers carriers a chance to adopt a new and innovative dynamic into their enterprise-based service mix. Nortel’s announcement demonstrates a strategic understanding of carrier needs and requirements in this rapidly emerging area and will give carriers a new set of tools with which to fulfill them.”

Nortel previously announced SIP contracts with leading carriers Orange, Neuf Cegetel, Bell Canada** and Telefonica. Nortel will showcase key SIP applications, including a mobile advertising Web Services application, in booth #2051 at NXTComm June 19-21 in Chicago.

Nortel’s SIP applications:

Web Services application leverages Parlay X API standards and allow businesses to enhance their web sites through interactive multimedia communications such as click-to-call, instant messaging and call presence. This new Web-services application will enable businesses to send targeted messages to their customers’ mobile device based on the user’s location and individual preferences. The Web Services APIs will be available Third Quarter, 2007.
Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) integrates voice, video, text and data communications into a seamless communications environment between desktop and mobile devices, using cellular and WLAN access. Enhanced capabilities provide unified voice, messaging and multimedia communications high-speed broadband services for workers whether they are at home or working remotely. They also allow a PC-based interface to screen mobile calls, and provide advanced collaboration features such as file sharing, while on a mobile call. These enhanced FMC offerings are available today.
Carrier-hosted Web Portal enhanced application allows subscribers to create and manage communications services via a personalized Web application. Preferences such as call routing and call blocking can be prioritized for each incoming call. Enhanced capabilities include use of a mobile internet browser to customize call and service profiles. The Web Portal and corresponding customization options are available today.
Nortel new and enhanced applications are designed to run today over a pre-IMS environment and are built with IMS interfaces necessary to run over future IMS core networks. The applications are enabled on the Application Server 5200 (AS 5200) and the Communication Server 2000 (CS 2000). To complement Nortel’s Application Servers, Nortel’s Developer Program has interoperability-tested more than 100 SIP products to deliver unique end-to-end solutions to carriers.

According to Dell’Oro Group, Nortel is the worldwide leader in Carrier VoIP and has been for 5 years running (2002-2006). Nortel has deployed its existing SIP Applications with more than 100 operators globally and has shipped more than 4 million SIP lines.
