Bell Canada Deploys Network Operations Managment Solution From Nortel

WEBWIRE

CHICAGO – Bell Canada is deploying Nortel’s* [NYSE/TSX: NT] network and service operations management solution to support delivery of new high-bandwidth communications services, such as video and large file sharing, to its business customers. Nortel’s solution, called Metro Ethernet Manager (MEM), greatly improves Ethernet network and service management by providing operators the capabilities they need to create and activate network services quickly and reliably.

“We have seen significant growth and now carry a wide variety of service traffic on our Ethernet network, such as IP virtual private networks, high-speed Internet access, and more” said Egidio Morson, general manager Operations for Bell Canada. “With Metro Ethernet Manager, we can more rapidly address the growing demand for high-bandwidth communication services, simplify our infrastructure and make new services more readily available for our customers.”

Nortel introduced significant enhancements to its MEM network and service operations management solution to enable carriers to support the ever-increasing demands of new video and multimedia-based services placed on the network.

“Network operators must be able to constantly monitor bandwidth demands on discrete areas of the network and react to that demand quickly and appropriately if they are to successfully deliver high-quality VoIP, video and related bandwidth intensive services,” said Philippe Morin, president, Metro Ethernet Networks, Nortel. “Metro Ethernet Manager extends and further differentiates Nortel’s leading Metro Ethernet solution by addressing the operational issues presented by the skyrocketing demand for bandwidth in the new era of Hyperconnectivity where everything that can be connected to the network, will be connected.”

While many providers are moving to implement Metro Ethernet infrastructures, this migration also presents a new set of operational challenges that did not previously exist with traditional “circuit-based” technologies. MEM provides a carrier-class toolset that has been built to address these challenges and reduce operational expense by simplifying Ethernet operations and delivering a solution that eases the setup, delivery and ongoing management of new services.

MEM works hand-in-hand with key Nortel technology innovations including Provider Backbone Transport (PBT), to further differentiate Nortel’s Metro Ethernet solution. With a purpose-built tool, MEM makes it simple to establish, browse and manage PBT trunks, so providers know what resources and capacity are being used. Other MEM enhancements simplify the set-up and ongoing management of services as well as better enable providers to identify and react to network issues before customer services are impacted.
