Bond Falls New West Campground Opening Likely Delayed

Existing dispersed sites are scheduled to remain open until September 15

Houghton, MI – Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) announced today that the new consolidated campground on the west side of Bond Falls Reservoir will probably not open July 15, 2007, as previously anticipated.

Changes in the work scope, the safety of campers in the area during construction, and weather issues are the primary factors in the delayed opening.

“We want to do this right and not just rush things to completion,” said Bob Meyers, UPPCO spokesperson. “We decided to do a little more tree clearing, and that means heavy construction equipment will be working in the area. We don’t want to jeopardize anyone’s safety by opening the new campground before all the associated work is completed.

“We’ll also need Mother Nature to cooperate by providing the proper amount of rainfall to grow new grass in the campground before we open,” he added. “So far this year, it’s been feast or famine in the rainfall department.”

The existing dispersed camp sites at Bond will remain open until after Labor Day as previously announced. The new campground could open fully or partially before that, but an exact date is not yet known.
