Active Broadband Networks Releases IPDR Based Usage Quota System for Cable Operators

WEBWIRE

Boston, MA May 21, 2007 – Active Broadband Networks, a pioneering developer of Open Source Subscriber Service Management Systems based upon emerging IPDR standards, announced the incorporation of Usage Quota Management in the Active Resource Manager.

“Managing subscriber usage is increasingly important to Broadband Service Providers”, said Chris Gunner, Chief Technical Officer at Active Broadband Networks. “Information provided by the Active Resource Manager and the Quota Manager allows operators to design services that meet the increasingly diverse needs of their customer base”.

The Open Source Active Resource Manager collects, stores and processes IPDR records to provide subscriber service management. The Quota Manager leverages IPDR information to accurately measure per subscriber usage and implement per-service tier usage thresholds. This functionality combined with the previously released Fair Use Profiler, an application that identifies persistent heavy users during periods of network congestion, enables new flexible service tiers.

Speed based service tiers provide limited choice for subscribers in selecting the service that best fits their usage and budgetary needs. Customers are placing increasingly diverse demands on Operators networks ranging from simple email and web browsing to rich media and streaming content. By combining service speed, volume based quotas and heavy use identification during peak periods, Operators can develop service tiers that meet the demands of casual users, rich media users and business users. Using the Active Resource Manager, Operators can cost effectively deliver service tiers at more competitive prices while maintaining the benefit of cable’s technological advantages.

The Open Source Release of the Active Resource Manager, including the Usage Quota System, is available today at www.a-bb.net.
