News Advisory:

New Jersey Sen. Joseph Vitale (D-Woodbridge) and state Human Services Commissioner James Davy will join members of the Covering Kids and Families Coalition at a news conference Aug. 11 at 2:15 p.m. at the New Jersey Hospital Association to draw attention to the plight of more than 223,000 New Jersey children without health insurance. This year, hospitals will take a more active role in signing up kids for coverage.

The event is part of a sixth annual nationwide Back-to-School effort funded by the Princeton-based Robert Wood Johnson Foundation geared to enrolling more kids in health insurance programs. This year’s launch comes on the heels of recent legislation that makes the NJ FamilyCare program more accessible and affordable. Studies show that children without health insurance are more likely to be absent from school and experience classroom performance challenges than those with regular access to healthcare services.

Through its Covering Kids and Families initiative, the RWJ Foundation works with coalitions in all 50 states to increase enrollment in insurance programs such as NJ FamilyCare. More than 60 organizations from across the state are involved in New Jersey’s coalition.
