Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns today announced that he has named Anthony Hulen director of the Office of External and Intergovernmental Affairs.

“Anthony’s broad experience at USDA and on Capitol Hill will continue to serve our stakeholders well,” said Johanns. “I look forward to his continued support in communicating to our stakeholders the important elements of the Farm Bill as well as a broad array of agricultural issues in which USDA plays a role.”

Hulen serves as the Department’s primary liaison to public and private stakeholders to help America’s farmers and ranchers succeed through expanded trade opportunities, rural economic development and the upcoming farm bill. Before his new appointment on April 11, 2007, Hulen served as USDA White House Liaison, a position he has held since July 2005 and continues to fill.

Hulen spent almost 10 years working on Capitol Hill. From 1996-97, he served as Press Secretary and Washington Office Director for former Rep. Jay Dickey of Arkansas. From 1997-2003, he worked in multiple roles for Rep. Ed Whitfield of Kentucky, including communications director, legislative assistant for agriculture and infrastructure issues, and Deputy Chief of Staff. And, from 2003-2004, Hulen served as Chief of Staff for Rep. Randy Neugebauer of Texas.
