Rohm and Haas Electronic Materials Invitational Science Fair Winners Announced

Freeport, NY, April 26, 2007 – Months of research and hard work paid off Sunday for the more than 70 top Long Island high school students who won top prizes for their scientific abilities in the 11th Annual Rohm and Haas Electronic Materials Invitational Science Fair at Great Neck South High School, Great Neck, NY. Another 61 students received Merit or Honorable Mention ribbons.

“Many of the students put in hundreds of hours of work on their projects and they produced valid, new science in the topics that will affect their generation, from alternative fuels to cancer detection,” said Peter Guastella, president of the Research Association, which organized the event.

Students participating in the fair were from ten Long Island high schools: Great Neck North, Great Neck South, Herricks, Jericho, Manhasset, Paul D. Schreiber (Port Washington), Roslyn, Southside, Syosset and The Wheatley School.

Students competed in seven categories: computer science; molecular biology; general biology; behavioral science; Earth, space, chemistry and physics; environmental science; and prototype engineering.

“It was a real pleasure to see our scientists of the future develop and demonstrate their knowledge and skills,” said Rohm and Haas Vice President David Schram. “Events, like this one, give students a sense of the excitement of discovery that those of us who work in science-based companies, such as Rohm and Haas, are fortunate enough to experience every day.”

Rohm and Haas Electronic Materials has sponsored the event every year since the science fair was started by science and research teachers from the participating high schools in 1996.
