National Academies Advisory: Annual meeting of the National Academy of Sciences

From April 28 to May 1 the National Academy of Sciences will hold its 144th annual meeting, at which new Academy members will be elected. ELECTION RESULTS will be available on May 1 at noon EDT online at http://national-academies.org. Reporters can register in advance to receive the list of new members via e-mail. Meeting sessions will be held in the auditorium of the National Academies building, 2100 C St., N.W.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:
APRIL 28, 8 P.M. TO 9 P.M. – Induction ceremony and signing of the “Registry of Membership” for members elected in 2006. A reception will follow from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m.



APRIL 29, 9 A.M. TO 10:30 A.M. – Science, Health, and an Aging Society. At this symposium, experts will discuss research on people in mid-to-late life.



APRIL 29, 11 A.M. TO 12:30 P.M. – Energy Choices and Global Warming. At this symposium, scientists will discuss alternative energy and our changing environment.



APRIL 29, 2 P.M. TO 3 P.M. – Award Ceremony. Recipients of NAS awards bestowed in 2007 will be honored, including Maxine F. Singer, president emeritus of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, who will receive the Academy’s most prestigious award, the Public Welfare Medal.



APRIL 30, 3 P.M. TO 4:30 P.M. – Human Societies and Climate Change
This symposium from the Academy’s Kavli Frontiers of Science symposia organized by and for young scientists, will feature talks on the role of climate in the history of world, the implications of historic regional climate change, and human adaptation to the effects of climate change.
