WASHINGTON— Kenneth L. Wainstein, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, announced today that Michael Mullaney, a 28-year veteran of law enforcement, has been appointed Chief of the Counterterrorism Section in the Justice Department’s National Security Division.

For the past three years, Mullaney has held the position of Principal Deputy Chief and Acting Chief of the Counterterrorism Section. During these assignments, he has developed strong partnerships between the Department and other federal agencies involved in counterterrorism. He has also contributed significantly to the formulation and execution of Departmental counterterrorism policies.

“Mike is a proven leader in the field of counterterrorism. As both agent and prosecutor, Mike has overseen complex investigations and has worked effectively with our partners in the war on terror,” said Assistant Attorney General Wainstein. “I am confident that his varied experience and strong relationships within the counterterrorism community will be valuable assets to the National Security Division.”

Mullaney’s 28 years of service includes tenures as a Special Agent with the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division, and as a federal prosecutor in various positions with the Department of Justice. Before joining the Department in 1989 in the Southern District of Florida’s Miami office, Mullaney served for 11 years as an IRS Special Agent. Since then, he has served primarily as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of Florida.

In his 14 years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Mullaney played the lead role in a number of drug, money laundering, and public corruption investigations and prosecutions. He has significant supervisory experience including almost three years as Chief of the Public Corruption/Civil Rights Section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida and a stint as Acting First Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of Illinois.

The Counterterrorism Section is responsible for the investigation, prosecution, and prevention of acts of terrorism anywhere in the world that impact on significant United States interests and persons.
