New Haven, Conn. — Recent art by Nancy Ruben will be on exhibit April 19–May 20 at Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale, 80 Wall St.

An opening reception featuring remarks by the artist will be held at Slifka Center on Thursday, April 19, 4 –7:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Rubens’ creative process involves both spontaneity and thoughtful decision-making. She establishes distinct moods that encourage individual interpretation, generating a sense of motion while examining the forces that create it. While the visual vocabulary that informs her new Blade/Scape Series is inspired by nature, it has been transformed into pure abstraction. In the past, Rubens has explored collage extensively. Employing everyday materials and papers, these works are complex and full of dynamic vigor. Though much more abstract, her newer body of work is a logical continuation of this process and its inherent ideas.

“Each painting is a visual stream of consciousness, a string of associations brought together into a coherent whole. The paintings incorporate collaged elements, the ephemera of everyday life and not just my life. Many of the papers are found by chance, and many are collected for me by others,” says Rubens of her work.

She notes, “It is an achievement to take disparate, discarded papers and found objects which are past their usefulness and to give them purpose, to find new meanings and a strange kind of poetry through context.”

Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale is home to Young Israel House at Yale and Yale Hillel. It serves Yale students, faculty and staff as well as members of the greater New Haven community by providing social, religious and cultural programming, including lectures, conferences, film festivals and arts events.
