Food Testing Division Inundated by Recent Events Impacting Food Industry

EMSL Analytical’s Food and Consumer Products Division has been working overtime to respond to food safety concerns from the general public and food manufacturers following the recent outbreak of stories regarding tainted human and pet food supplies. EMSL has responded to this surge in activity by providing rapid laboratory analyses to ensure the safety of our nation’s food supply.

As a result of the recent activities in the industry, EMSL has also begun a public campaign to educate the industry on HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points). Regardless of the types of products or methods a food processing company uses to manufacture goods, an efficient and effective sanitation program is essential to ensure a safe final product.

Sensitive microbiological tests are available to verify the cleanliness of a food contact and non-food contact surfaces. Routine monitoring of these surfaces will minimize cross-contamination, spoilage and adverse aesthetic degradation of the products.

In addition to ensuring a quality product and clean process, effective sanitation programs are also essential in preventing the formation of biofilms. Biofilms in the manufacturing process can be made up of a variety of organisms, but are often started by as few as one cell.
