Texas Instruments and Avnet Electronics Marketing Americas Present Live Webcast on New Desin Concepts in a Power Stage for Solar - Or Fuel - Cell Applications


Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) and Avnet Electronics Marketing Americas, the largest operating group of Avnet, Inc. (NYSE: AVT), will present a live Analog eLabTM webcast for designers entitled “New Design Concepts in a Power Stage for Solar- or Fuel-cell Applications” on Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. CDT (18:00 hrs CET). The webcast will highlight new options for generating operating voltage supplies from very low-voltage sources. During the webcast, TI analog expert Bill Klein, P.E., and eLab panelists Toshiyuki (Rick) Zaitsu of TI and Angela Suen of Avnet will discuss new ways of thinking about circuit design and how the latest generation of synchronous boost converters can be implemented to achieve successful results. DC/DC boost converters that operate at input voltages lower than 0.3V with high efficiency can be incorporated into new and innovative applications powered by single-cell solar or micro-fuel cells. One example that will be highlighted during the webcast is a built-in solar-powered cell phone charger that provides exceptional standby time. This single-cell solar design eliminates the need for multiple-solar cells in series and the required protection circuitry. Another benefit of designing with extremely low input operating voltage is the elimination of many of the problems encountered when operating from single-cell alkaline, NiCd or MiNh batteries that are commonly used to power anything from toys to portable medical devices.

During the lab session, the panelists will demonstrate how the boost converter’s unique features enable low-voltage operation to extend battery life. Viewers will be shown techniques for overcoming the challenges of low-voltage inputs, such as pass-load conditions and start-up capability, to provide longer operating time in end equipment.

Bill Klein, P.E., is the host for the TI Analog eLab Webcast. Klein is a senior applications engineer with the high performance linear division of TI. He joined TI through its acquisition of Burr-Brown in August 2000. Klein is the author of more than 100 magazine articles, application notes and conference papers. His experience as an analog circuit designer covers 35 years in fields ranging from mineral exploration to nuclear medical imaging.

Angela Suen is a TI-dedicated field applications engineer with Avnet. She has several years of experience in switching power supply design. Suen earned a BSEE from Washington State University and is currently pursuing a MS in Engineering Management at Santa Clara University.

Toshiyuki (Rick) Zaitsu is an applications engineer for portable power at Texas Instruments and is currently supporting highly integrated low-power DC/DCs. He has over 20 years of experience designing DC/DC converters and marketing telecom systems in the power supply industry. Zaitsu earned a MSEE from Kumamoto University and a Ph.D. at Kyushu University. He holds five U.S. patents and has published more than 50 papers.
