Lenovo Gets Recognition For Meeting Electronics Products Environmental Assessment Tool Criteria

Lenovo was recognized by the Chairman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, the Federal Environmental Executive and the Green Electronics Council for helping to supply federal agencies with PCs that meet the Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) criteria. Lenovo offers more than 40 EPEAT-registered products with a majority of them being silver-rated. EPEAT addresses environmental aspects such as material selection, design for end of life, energy usage, packaging and more.

The Institute of Packaging Professionals also recognized Lenovo with the 2006 AmeriStar Award in the electronics packaging category for the Lenovo Desktop PC Reflex® thermoformed cushion design. The Lenovo Desktop PC pack eliminates the use of traditional PC foam packaging and decreases the amount of materials required to effectively ship Lenovo desktop PCs by 25 percent per PC.

The new, completely recycled and recyclable Desktop PC pack is helping to significantly reduce the use of virgin plastic required in the production of traditional foam packaging. For example, one, 40-foot truckload of Reflex® thermoformed cushions delivers the same amount of packaging materials as approximately five, 40-foot truckloads of traditional foam. “This is a significant achievement for the PC and packaging industries,” said Gerry Smith, senior vice president, Global Supply Chain, Lenovo. “Our Desktop PC pack represents Lenovo’s best-in-class thinking and demonstrates the company’s commitment to developing solutions that are beneficial to the environment, our customers and Lenovo.” “The Lenovo Reflex® thermoformed cushion design for desktop PCs was judged to be a category leader,” said Patrick Farrey, IOPP General Manager. “AmeriStar winners must pass stringent scrutiny in six criteria: innovation, protection, economics, performance, marketing and environmental impact. Our judges agreed that the Lenovo Reflex® package was among this year’s best.” Lenovo’s winning Desktop PC pack will be on display at the Packaging Summit Expo and Conference at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill. from May 15-17, 2007. Winners of an AmeriStar Award will be honored at the AmeriStar Package Awards Reception scheduled at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center on May 16, 2007.
