Gluek Park Cleanup Begins; Media Briefing June 21

WEBWIRE

News Advisory:

A cleanup effort to address asbestos-contaminated soil at Minneapolis’ Gluek Park is under way. A media briefing at the Minneapolis Park District property, 1927 Marshall Street N.E., along the Mississippi River, will be held Tuesday, June 21, at 11 a.m. The park has been closed since late 2003.

EPA representatives will be on hand and light construction equipment will be visible. Representatives from state and local environmental and health agencies are also expected.

The multi-million dollar project is expected to continue through the summer. Contamination at the park has been traced to waste material generated at the long-closed Western Minerals facility in northeast Minneapolis. From 2000 to 2004, EPA completed more than 200 residential cleanups associated with contaminated materials produced by Western Minerals.
