Tim White-Sobieski’s new solo exhibition „Awakening“ is the first one for the artist at Galerie Michael Schultz. In this series of large scale phototgraphs (120 x 140 cm, 150 x 180 cm, 120 x 240 cm), his motif is a teenager (White-Sobieski’s son), whose appearance is often digitally multiplied and displayed in front of nocturnal backdrops.

The series „Awakening“ is based on a video, which White-Sobieski filmed about a year ago. The video “Awakening” and a series of the large-scale photographs are united by the image of a boy whose features are familiar to the audience from the earlier works by Tim White-Sobieski (“Sweet Dreams”, “Before They Were Beatles”). Lined up, these videos and photographs would present a story of growing up and maturing of the contemporary American generation. This generation dismisses symbols of all-American youth of the 1960s-1980s; they are more worldly examples of awakening minds and souls.

With a ruminant imagery the photographs reflect on the processes of growing up. The photographs are filled with symbols easily perceived and interpreted - birds, road, rising sun, multiplicity of one figure, etc. It is the cinematic skill of the artist that points out at each one of them manifesting questions about life’s value and meaning.

The boy seems introvert and lost in thought. In a world between dream and reality he does not allow any eye contact with the spectator and therefore does not involve him in the events. Symbols such as the yo-yo and the clock stand for progress and life time. At the same time they capture the moment of movement and emphasize just this one short moment, which can only be made visible with photography. The works juxtapose aesthetic balance and a tantalizing play with photographic perfection and different facets of content.

Tim White-Sobieski is one of the leading figures in contemporary art, his work is exhibited widely internationally, including Germany, Canada, Switzerland, France, USA, Korea, Belgium, Italy and Spain.
