WEBWIRE

The Siemens Group Industrial Solutions and Services (I&S) will expand the steel-production capacity and modernize the plate rolling mill of the Mexican steel producer, Altos Hornos de Mexico S.A.B. de C.V. (AHMSA), in Monclova. With this investment program AHMSA intends to expand its current plate production capacity from 500,000 metric tons to one million metric tons by 2009. The order volume amounts to 210 million euros (275 million US dollars). In order to ensure that emissions from the new melt shop will be kept to an absolute minimum, a state-of-the-art dedusting system will also be installed.

AHMSA is the only Mexican plate producer which is used in ship-building, the construction and petroleum industries and for the manufacture of machines, tools, pressure vessels and containers. In order to consolidate its leading position in the regional steel market, AHMSA commissioned the Metals Technologies Division (MT) of I&S to increase the output of its steel and plate-rolling mills. The project comprises the expansion of the steel work’s capacity, the related environmental facilities, the supply of a single-strand continuous slab caster with a capacity of 1.2 million metric tons per year, a new steckel mill in addition to all of the associated automation systems and the power and water-supply facilities.
