This book is about a handful of Pacific Northwest fishers and how they live in the company of others. Using strong Native American female protagonists, it paints the seascape with a story of friendship, values, failure, and triumph. Fishers are bound together like a fraternity or sorority, although there is no such thing in the rough informal fisher society. They are initiated members of a somewhat exclusive club in which the extended families of fishers and the vessels are also members. The story is dedicated to those independent free souls lost over the years.

The author of In the Company of Fishers, Ken Boire, also wrote Inherit the Tide. His Native American roots show through his writing. By day he is a consulting economist specializing in resource issues. His novels are about people setting themselves free.

What is different about In the Company of Fishers, is that you will be absorbed into the story wondering where the fiction begins, or if it is there at all. The characters are alive on the page. Much of this story happens in the salty back yards of the Pacific Northwest. Those of us who have walked the sand or splashed playfully in the Pacific will be in the skin of these people.
