ADVA Optical Networking today announced that it has been named as a supplier of Ethernet last-mile access products in BT’s 21st Century Network (21CN). Designed as one of the world’s largest next-generation networks (NGN), BT’s 21CN will deploy the ADVA FSP 150 as the Network Termination Equipment (NTE) throughout its network. This will enable BT to deliver video, voice and data services across the last-mile with unparalleled flexibility, control and management.

The ADVA FSP 150 portfolio, featuring Etherjack® technology, provides Ethernet demarcation, extension and aggregation. This enables BT to provide stringent monitoring from the network core to the customer premise to remotely respond to faults, minimising the need for manual intervention at customer sites and rapidly increasing their response time. This is critical for BT as they seek to offer bandwidth-intensive applications, such as Internet Protocol TV, Voice over IP (VoIP) and triple play services to a much wider market of business and residential customers.

“ADVA Optical Networking shares BT’s vision for innovation.” commented Matt Beal, director of core convergence, BT Wholesale. “ADVA Optical Networking will deploy its FSP 150 products to provide the ideal last-mile transport solution, enabling us to create a highly flexible and scalable network platform to roll out 21CN services more aggressively, enabling us to better serve carriers and businesses across the U.K.”

The ADVA FSP 150 portfolio provides leading-edge intelligent Ethernet solutions for the verification of strict Service Level Agreements (SLAs), delivery of advanced remote Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) capabilities and last-mile transportation of voice, video and data services. Many of Etherjack’s advanced features are controlled through the ADVA Network Manager (ADVA NM), which provides Event and Alarm Management as well as Service Level Test and Provisioning capabilities. With seamless integration into BT’s Operations Support Systems (OSS), the ADVA NM enables continuous end-to-end service provisioning and monitoring.

BT’s evolution to a NGN provider requires the deployment of future-proof products that can adapt to constant technology innovation. The FSP 150 portfolio achieves this with open protocol transparency. Because the access network represents a major investment, it must be future-proofed to allow it to inter-work with a number of core technologies such as Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) Switching, Provider Backbone Bridging-Traffic Engineering (PBB-TE) and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS). A major criterion in selecting ADVA Optical Networking as a 21CN supplier was the flexibility of the FSP 150 design and its ability to actively support all the protocols required for next-generation Ethernet service delivery.

Brian L. Protiva, ADVA Optical Networking’s CEO added, “BT is building one of the world’s most powerful and innovative networks. Creating it on intelligent Ethernet technology ensures this world-class carrier’s services benefit from strict demarcation, advanced monitoring facilities, remote fault resolution and control of traffic from the network core to the customer premise. The FSP 150 family does it with greater accuracy, stringency and control than any other competitive technology.”
