24 January 2007
targetneutral, the UK’s first mainstream scheme to “neutralise” CO2 emissions caused by driving, has been voted Innovation of the Year by the readers of BusinessCar Magazine.

targetneutral is being presented with the accolade today at an exclusive ceremony for the fleet industry’s top executives.

The BusinessCar Awards are the only awards in the market that are solely voted for by the readership. This makes them the most influential in the business car arena.

Said Tristan Young, BusinessCar Editor-in-Chief, “One of the most prominent themes of the business car industry for the past year has been the environment, which is why BusinessCar readers voted BP’s targetneutral campaign and website an Innovation of the Year.”

Peter Mather, BP’s Head of Country, UK commented: “targetneutral is delighted to have won such a prestigious award, particularly as it reflects the growing interest among motorists in taking responsibility for offsetting their carbon emissions.”

targetneutral offers motorists a way of neutralising the carbon dioxide emissions of their cars for the coming year and beyond. Type in a few details about your car such as type, size and your annual mileage and targetneutral calculates how much CO2 you’ll be producing and then lets the environmentally conscious driver fund a CO2-reducing scheme to that amount. The average annual cost is just £20 a year per car.

Money generated by targetneutral goes towards a portfolio of independent CO2 reduction projects including alternative and renewable energy. Existing projects include a biomass energy plant in Himachal Pradesh, a wind farm in Karnataka, India and an animal waste management and methane capture program in Mexico. As targetneutral grows, more projects will be added
Tristan Young, BusinessCar Editor-in-chief, said: “The BusinessCar Awards are a barometer for the company car market. targetneutral, BP’s carbon off-set innovation victory demonstrates how influential green matters are.”
