BigBand’s Cuda platform completes triple play offering and provides migration path to M-CMTS

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Jan. 16., 2006 – BigBand Networks, Inc., a leading provider of broadband multimedia infrastructure for video, voice and data, today announced that WOW! Internet, Cable and Phone has completed its deployment of BigBand’s Cuda® cable modem termination systems (CMTS) to expand its broadband Internet and telephone services. WOW! deployed BigBand’s DOCSIS® 2.0, PacketCable™, DSG and PCMM-qualified platform to increase broadband access speeds and deliver enhanced voice-over-IP (VoIP) services. WOW!, which also uses BigBand platforms to deliver digital video services, now uses BigBand platforms to support each of its video, voice and data offerings.

“WOW! customers were eager for higher access speeds and comprehensive triple play services that include VoIP, which we are fulfilling through this expansion of our relationship with BigBand Networks,” said Michael H. Brody, chief technical officer for WOW!. “After extensive evaluation of our alternatives, we believe BigBand’s Cuda offers the best solution for increased capacity and enhanced reliability in WOW! systems. BigBand’s roadmap includes plans for capacity increases with a Modular CMTS (M-CMTS) architecture, as well as support for DOCSIS® 3.0 downstream channel bonding that leverages the hardware we buy today.”

WOW! sites in Illinois, Michigan and Ohio have deployed BigBand’s Cuda platform. The Cuda is designed with internal redundancy and the ability to cope with variable RF plant conditions to better deliver real-time services, such as VoIP. The Cuda deployments complement WOW!’s digital television services—including HDTV—running on the BigBand Broadband Multimedia-Service Router (BMR®).

“WOW!’s use of Cuda to support faster broadband access and VoIP in combination with digital video delivered through our BMR amounts to a powerful triple play offering,” said John Connelly, executive vice president of marketing and business development for BigBand Networks. “Furthermore, Cuda’s migration path to DOCSIS 3.0 downstream channel bonding via M-CMTS can help WOW! significantly lower the cost of increasing access speeds and adding new services.”

Cuda is designed to provide a range of benefits for broadband IP services within a networked, multi-service environment, including:

• Scalable and reliable IP routing and switching

• Redundancy for high availability of service offerings to discourage subscriber churn

• RF technology and algorithms that provide enhanced noise immunity, along with spectrum management, to correct for plant impairments and reduce operational costs

• Field-based upgradeability to M-CMTS and channel bonding that expand access speeds economically.
