SSH Tectia Server for IBM z/OS 5.3 Adds Support for PKI to Enable True Cross-Platform Certificate Usage Within and Between Windows, Unix, Linux, and IBM mainframe Environments

Helsinki, Finland and Wellesley, Mass. - December 18, 2006, SSH Communications Security (HEX:SSH1V), a world-leading provider of enterprise security solutions and end-to-end communications security, and the original developer of the Secure Shell protocol, today announced that SSH Tectia Server for IBM z/OS 5.3 is generally available with support for digital certificates and third-party PKI (Public-Key Infrastructure) systems.

SSH Tectia Server for IBM z/OS is the only enterprise-class Secure Shell solution with direct MVS (Multiple Virtual Storage) file system support and hardware acceleration for secure cross-platform file transfers and secure TN3270 connections. The solution received earlier this year the IBM ServerProven® certification as a result of rigorous product verification in real-life production environment. Unlike unsupported open-source tools that lack full functionality, SSH Tectia for IBM z/OS is a robust security solution for protecting data communications to and from IBM mainframes.

With the introduction of certificate support in the new SSH Tectia Server for IBM z/OS 5.3, SSH Tectia customers can now leverage both user certificates and server certificates in all key enterprise platforms, including Windows, Unix, Linux, and mainframe. The advanced certificate validation capabilities of SSH Tectia including support for multi-level certificate chains and multiple revocation methods ensure seamless interoperability with any X.509v3 standards-compliant PKI environment. In addition, two-factor authentication tokens and smart cards, such as Common Access Card (CAC), can now be used to authenticate mainframe users when they transfer files or use TN3270 applications from Windows workstations, eliminating the security risks of memorized passwords. SSH Tectia Server for IBM z/OS 5.3 allows users optionally to generate and store private keys on hardware and use System Authorization Facility (SAF) for storing certificates for maximum security and flexibility.

“The administrative work associated with creating, distributing, updating, and revoking authentication keys has become a major challenge for IT departments in large organizations,” said Arto Vainio, CEO of SSH Communications Security Corp. “While many large companies have already deployed digital certificates in some parts of their network, the time and effort needed to enable the use of digital certificates with applications has slowed down the broader use of the existing PKI systems. SSH Tectia, with its standards-based certificate support and flexible configuration options, enables organizations to leverage their existing PKI platforms without expensive integration when securing data communications, including mainframe connections.”
