Oracle(r) Data Guard Doubles Up Database Data Protection and Disaster Recovery

Independent Research Firm States Oracle Data Guard Provides Cost-Effective Solution for Protecting Enterprise Data

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. 14-DEC-2006 According to a recently published report by Enterprise Strategy Group, Oracle(r) Data Guard, a key feature of Oracle Database 10g, helps customers increase availability and data consistency, reduce downtime and add a superior level of data protection, compared to standard tape backup and remote mirroring systems.

The report, written by Enterprise Strategy Group Analyst Brian Babineau, assesses the functionality of Oracle Data Guard. According to the report, Oracle Data Guard enables customers to implement and maintain a standby database, with no geographical limitations, to protect data and increase availability should any event cause a production database to fail. Features such as Data Guard Transport Services, Data Guard Apply Services, and tight integration with Oracle Real Application Clusters and Oracle Flashback Database help customers realize more efficient network utilization, comprehensive data protection, standby utilization and integrated management of their business continuity solutions.

In the report, Babineau states that Oracle Data Guard “represents a cost-effective solution” for protecting enterprise data, “going beyond the limitations” of standard tape-based backup and recovery and remote mirroring solutions, with a native database capability that provides optimum data protection and availability. Additionally, customers can increase their return on disaster recovery investments by using Oracle Data Guard to run queries, reports and backups using their standby database. The report features three in-depth customer profiles that outline the customers’ IT environments and their use of Oracle Data Guard for achieving higher levels of data availability and protection.

Babineau concludes the report stating that Oracle Data Guard gives customers “an option besides storage-based mirroring to ensure that database information will be protected regardless of what disrupts access to their production databases. To the extent that [an] organization views information as a business asset, Oracle Data Guard is a next-generation data protection solution that can mitigate the risk of data loss and downtime.”
