New kids’ Christmas book featuring famous liberals as cartoon villains gains advocates, detractors.

Los Angeles, CA (December 11, 2006)-- Twenty years ago, no one would have believed that in 2006, Christmas carols, nativity scenes, and Santa Claus himself would be banned from the public square…in some cases, so as not to offend the tender sensibilities of people who have vowed to kill us and with whom we are at war. Yet it’s happening across the country.

Like many Americans, author Katharine DeBrecht is dismayed with the world that liberal “elites” are creating. “When people ask me why I write kids’ books with a political edge -- books like ’HELP! MOM! There are Liberals Under My Bed!’ and my newest, ’HELP! MOM! The 9th Circuit’s Nabbed the Nativity!’ (Kids Ahead; hardcover: $15.95; ISBN 0976726920), I tell them to look at the madness that’s all around us. The future is up for grabs, and sad to say, morality and common sense aren’t winning.”

The city of Chicago has banned the showing of clips from the movie “The Nativity;” Santa has been deemed too religious for a school fundraiser in Warwick, N.Y.; a Wisconsin high school told student leaders that any religious symbols, decorating, or wording associated with Christmas are prohibited. A spokesman for the electronics store Best Buy told an interviewer that the term “Merry Christmas” is disrespectful.

To whom? “Not to the 95% of Americans who celebrate Christmas,” asserts DeBrecht. “Clearly we are sliding down an Orwellian slope. And with Democrats in charge of Congress, that slope is likely to become even steeper.” In other words, the grip liberals have on children is becoming tighter, which is why conservative parents need to fight back. And that’s what the HELP! MOM! books are all about.

“Sure, casting a Hillary Clinton look-alike as the busybody Grinch who wants to stop a third-grade Christmas pageant in ’9th Circuit’ is making a political statement,” DeBrecht notes. “But so are books like ’King & King,’ which push gay marriage, and ’It’s Just a Plant,’ which is a kids’ pot primer. Yet these books -- and worse -- are in school libraries across the country.” Of course, that’s just another example of liberal hypocrisy …political messages are fine, as long as they lean left.

That’s why DeBrecht is not concerned about the enemies she’s made since “HELP! MOM! There are Liberals Under My Bed!” made such a splash in 2005. She’s been derided by the Huffington Press, called one of the Top Ten Conservative Idiots by the website Democratic Underground, vilified by Andrew Sullivan and called out by Hillary Clinton’s press secretary.

But she’s found plenty of fans too, including Rush Limbaugh. And she’s thrilled by the letters and comments from parents around the country who applaud her efforts to redress the balance in kids’ literature. “That’s what makes it all worthwhile,” says DeBrecht. “Of course, being able to lampoon liberals like Teddy Kennedy, John Kerry, Hillary and the entire 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in order to demonstrate the loss of spiritual and family values by the far left, makes for humorous, yet impactful truth.”
