Unisys services and server technology helped NCHHS deploy real-time infrastructure yielding significant cost and service-quality benefits

BLUE BELL, Pa. - December 7, 2006 – Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced that a Unisys client, the Nassau County Division of Health & Human Services (NCHHS), a government agency on Long Island, New York, has been honored with a prestigious 2006 InfoWorld 100 award. The award recognizes the agency for its migration to real-time infrastructure centered on a fully-modernized application architecture deployed on a Unisys ES7000 enterprise server.

The new infrastructure enables NCHHS to enhance the speed and efficiency with which it provides an array of social and health services to more than 250,000 of the county’s 1.3 million residents.

The InfoWorld 100 annual awards program honors companies and organizations, such as NCHHS, for innovative use of technology to enhance business goals.

“It’s been said that fortune favors the bold. The inspiration for this year’s finalists to tackle such sweeping changes varies widely – from reducing delivery time of products and services to replacing cumbersome legacy systems,” said Richard Gincel, InfoWorld senior editor. “Regardless of the motivation, high ambition unites them all.”

In implementing what would become a state-wide model deployment and the award-winning solution, NCHHS turned to Unisys services and technology in order to establish the foundation for a real-time infrastructure driven by organizational business policies that directly and dynamically enables strategic business processes.

The deployment began with a seamless migration from another vendor’s outdated system to a Unisys designed infrastructure that enabled the division to take advantage of web services through powerful new software, such as Microsoft .NET ASP applications, for improved operational efficiency and client service.

As part of the deployment, the NCHHS IT staff implemented a Microsoft SQL Server environment, relying on Unisys technical experts to optimize the performance of the SQL Server database by properly sizing and configuring it to accommodate very large daily transaction volumes.

A 16-processor Unisys ES7000 enterprise server provides a key element in the agency’s real-time infrastructure, running NCHHS’s mission-critical applications and environmental software, such as Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition, and SQL Server 2000.

According to NCHHS, as a result of its deployment, the division experiences a five-to-one cost savings and serves as the backbone of major county quality service initiatives put in place to streamline operations to better serve county residents. For example, the new system easily and securely manages and processes thousands of transactions, such as food stamp and client case history requests, on a daily basis.

“Our trust in Unisys services and the value of Unisys technology in the data center put NCHHS in a position to better serve our customers, the people of Nassau County,” said Don Rodgers, Manager for Information Technology, NCHHS. “Unisys consultants showed us that by migrating rather than re-engineering, HHS would see cost savings. The prospect of that benefit was impossible to ignore, given the frequent constraints on resources and funding for government initiatives. We are very pleased and honored to be recognized as an InfoWorld 100 winner and consider Unisys to be a partner in our innovation.”

Mark Feverston, vice president, Enterprise Server and Storage Solutions, Unisys, added, “NCHHS richly deserves to be honored for taking the lead in showing how a real-time infrastructure can transform the business of government. Unisys takes great satisfaction in knowing that our enterprise server technology and solutions expertise help deliver tangible benefits to the citizens of Nassau County.”
