Toppan Printing Company America Wins ’Best Of Show’ in Xerox’s Printing Innovation Awards
CHICAGO, Oct. 16, 2006 -- Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) has presented Toppan Printing Company America Inc. and graphic design student Monica Eun-Kyung Yoon with the “Best of Show” honor in the annual Printing Innovation with Xerox Imaging Awards.
The multinational competition recognizes innovation and excellence in digital printing applications. Toppan Printing Company America, a commercial printing company, and Yoon won for their “Fear” submission, a digitally printed book about various subjects that people fear, such as the future, loss and being judged.
This year’s PIXI Awards competition received more than 300 entries, the largest number in the competition’s five-year history. Entries were submitted from the United States, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela.
Yoon, a student from the New York City-based Parsons The New School of Design, worked with Toppan to produce her senior thesis. The book was printed on the Xerox Xerox iGen3™ Digital Production Press with a Xerox FreeFlow™ DocuSP™ print server using Adobe InDesign software. The book particularly showcases the press’ ability to create detailed work with rich blacks.
“Graphic design students are embracing digital technology,” said Gavin Smith, director of digital services, Toppan Printing Company America, located in Somerset, N.J. “Through the display of Yoon’s portfolio and word of mouth, other student designers are requesting that their work be printed digitally on the Xerox iGen3 press.”
First, second and third place awards were presented in four categories: variable print/one-to-one marketing communications, monochrome and highlight color documents, short-run digital color documents, and digital books and manuals. Awards were presented to the print provider, creative agency and client to reinforce the importance of partnerships in the creation of digitally printed materials. A PIXI Award was also presented for the best use of Xerox supplies.

Winners in the individual categories are:
Variable print/one-to-one marketing communications
* Astoria Graphics Inc., New York, N.Y., first place for its “Fishing for New Business” submission, a personalized direct-mail campaign to lure potential clients by demonstrating the printer’s direct-mail capabilities. The piece, which received an 80 percent response rate, was printed on the Xerox iGen3 press with a FreeFlow DocuSP print server.
* Pareto Corporation Inc., Toronto, second place for its “My Money” submission, a customized information package for SunLife Financial clients. The package was personalized with specific benefits information, which resulted in reduced inventory and marketing costs, and was printed on an iGen3 press.
* Copygraph S.A., Buenos Aires, Argentina, third place for its “Libro Del Bebe” submission, a newborn baby kit that includes a personalized book and calendar - with the baby’s name, photo and parent’s information - to track the child’s activities, health and growth. The kit was printed on the Xerox DocuColor™ 8000 Digital Press using FreeFlow Web Services software for Porteñadas, a major stationery company.
Monochrome and highlight color
* DataMart Direct Inc., Hanover Park, Ill., first place for its “GE Wellness Welcome Kit” submission, which featured variable copy printed on the Nuvera™ 120 Digital Copier/Printer and a color cover printed on the Xerox iGen3 press. This application allowed the client, GE Financial, to personalize benefits enrollment kits and eliminate preprinted inventory.
* American Greetings Corp., Cleveland, Ohio, second place for its “All Night Long Invite” submission, which was printed on the iGen3 press. The invitation for American Greetings’ 100-year anniversary celebration combined black and gray tones with silver foil stamping.
* Bassett Direct, Markham, Ontario, third place for its “Air Miles Gold Mailing” submission, a direct-mail piece used to communicate sponsor offers, incentives and cross-selling opportunities for The Air Miles Reward Program. The mailer was printed on the Xerox DocuPrint™ 90 Copier/Printer.
Short-run digital color
* Salem State College, Salem, Mass., first place for its “Yen Vo Calendar” submission. Created by an art student, the calendar incorporates photography and digital copying on heavyweight paper and is printed double-sided on the Xerox DocuColor 3535 Copier/Printer.
* Sigma Marketing Group, Rochester, N.Y., second place for its “2006 Cement Mixer” submission, a three-dimensional mailer resembling building materials that was used to recruit businesses to a fundraiser. The mailer helped raise more than $65,000 for Habitat for Humanity and was printed on the Xerox DocuColor™ 240/250 Copier/Printer.
* Hume Imaging Inc., Scarborough, Ontario, third place for its “King’s Garden Menu” submission, a four-color menu with bright photos and easy-to-understand descriptions. Created on a synthetic paper stock, the menu was printed on a Xerox DocuColor™ 2045 Digital Color Press.
Digital books and manuals
* TBC Digital, Fairfield, N.J., first place for its “Ralph Lauren Accessories Book” submission, an in-store catalog printed on the Xerox iGen3 press on textured paper that provides a lifelike look and feel of the products, such as a leather belt or purse.
* Toppan Printing Company America, Somerset, N.J., second place for its “Dynamic Dynosaur” submission, a hand-bound book printed on the iGen3 press that showcases the portfolio of a student at Parsons The New School of Design.
* CJ Digital Inc., Toronto, third place for its “Love Story” submission, a combination of photographs printed on the Xerox DocuColor 8000 Digital Press to create a book of remembrance of a couple’s 50-year marriage.
* The Print Network, Torrance, Calif., was recognized for the best use of Xerox supplies for its “Perceptions” submission, two books with a digital slip case displaying a compilation of abstract photography and text. The books were printed, for artist Rik van Glintenkamp, on Xerox Digital Color Elite Silk 80 lb. and 110 lb. Cover paper and produced on the Xerox iGen3 press with a FreeFlow DocuSP print server.
Winning entries will be showcased in Xerox’s booth, No. 1217, at Graph Expo, a major commercial printing trade show held in Chicago Oct. 15-18. They will also be displayed at the Gil Hatch Center for Customer Innovation in Rochester, N.Y., the world’s largest permanent showcase of digital products for the graphic communications and production printing markets.
