Secures major role on Firelink supporting Airwave, one of the world’s largest nationwide public safety communications networks

Basingstoke, UK – 10 October, 2006 - Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) today announced it has been awarded a seven year framework contract to support the Fire and Rescue Services (FRS) in England, Scotland and Wales. This contract, which includes the option for extension for a further five years, is announced as the Fire and Rescue Services join Airwave, the UK’s digital communications network dedicated to the emergency services and public safety workers, and one of the largest nationwide TETRA (TErrestrial Trunked RAdio) networks in the world.

Firelink is the project responsible for the procurement, delivery and installation of a single wide area radio system for the FRS. The contract was awarded to Motorola by O2 Airwave, winner of the bid with the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG)[1] to supply the communications network to the FRS. Airwave’s nationwide TETRA network, supplied by Motorola, will now be used by police forces, ambulance services and the FRS in England, Scotland and Wales for their primary communications needs.

The frame contract covers the supply of Motorola TETRA radios (MTM800 and MTH800) with both voice and data capabilities for fire appliances and officers’ cars; mobile data terminals (MW800) to be installed in fire appliances and other vehicles, and seven years’ extended support for radio and mobile data terminals, with an option to extend for up to five further years.

Pete Richardson, O2 Airwave, said: “Today’s world more than ever needs trusted, resilient and reliable emergency communications - one technology, one open standard. We’ve a proven track record of working with Motorola since 2000 on the Airwave network, which is one of the largest public safety networks in the world. Projects of this scale and importance are complex so it’s imperative that we have trusted and resilient support.”

Iain Clarke, Motorola, said: “Motorola is a long term champion of the use of technology to aid inter-service working and we are delighted to have won this opportunity to directly support the Fire and Rescue Services, and to further strengthen our relationship with O2 Airwave.”
