World Safety Declaration Marks First Anniversary With 11 Chinese Organizations Joining Global Initiative

WILMINGTON, Del., and BEIJING, China, September 20, 2006 - The World Safety Declaration , a global initiative by industry to improve safety in the workplace, today marked its first anniversary as 11 Chinese organizations became charter signers at the 3rd China International Forum on Work Safety and China International Occupational Safety and Health Exhibition.


The number of signers of the World Safety Declaration has nearly tripled since it was initiated in September 2005 by DuPont at the 17th World Congress on Safety and Health at Work, bringing the total of charter signers to 45.


“It is fitting that this anniversary celebration is being held at the 3rd China International Forum,” said Mark Vergnano , group vice president – DuPont Safety & Protection. “Both the Forum and the World Safety Declaration are based on collaboration and a commitment to action. We are all working together toward the same goal – to bring people home safely from work every day, everywhere.”


James Forsman , vice president and general manager – DuPont Safety Resources , emphasized the commitment of the Chinese government to workplace safety and its continuing efforts to enhance safety management systems. “As a major growing economy, China’s leadership in this area will help make a step-change across the world in providing safer workplaces,” Forsman said.

Signers of the World Safety Declaration agree to make a public commitment to improving workplace safety, collaborate with other companies and report their challenges, progress and successes at the 18th World Congress on Safety and Health at Work scheduled for Seoul, Korea, in 2008.


Led by the State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS), the new charter signers are the China Academy of Safety Science and Technology (CASST); PetroChina Company Ltd.; China National Gold Group Corporation; China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation; Huaibei Coal Mine Group; China Nonferrous Metal Mining (Group) Co., Ltd.; China State Construction Engineering Corporation; South North Power Corporation; China National Logging Corporation and ASIMCO Technologies. They share the commitment with Yantai Wanhua Polyurethanes Company to improve work safety in China.


“We recognize the leadership of companies within China that have signed the World Safety Declaration. This symbolizes the commitment that our whole society has for an even greater emphasis on work safety as we focus on safe development that is in harmony with the economic and social needs of our country,” said Liang Jiakun, deputy administrator of SAWS.
