Earlier this year, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that a home improvements company in Anaheim was ordered to pay over $58,000 for failure to comply with the Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (RRP). The settlement required the company to pay the civil penalty due to renovation activities that took place in several cities in California.

The RRP Rule requires that firms performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities and pre-schools built before 1978 require their firm to be certified by the EPA (or an EPA authorized state), use certified renovators who are trained by EPA-approved training providers and follow lead-safe work practices.

Numerous homes and buildings constructed or renovated before 1960 contain heavily leaded paint. Some built as recently as 1978 can also contain lead-based paint. These paints can be on the interior or exterior of structures. Exposure to lead can occur when lead-based paints deteriorate or if they are improperly removed from surfaces during renovation, remodeling or demolition activities.

“It is well known that lead exposure impacts the nervous system and can cause a range of health effects from behavioral problems and learning disabilities, to seizures and death,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “The RRP Rule is meant to prevent hazardous lead exposure for workers, building occupants and families. At LA Testing, we provide quick and affordable lead testing solutions to identify this toxic metal, prevent needless exposures and to help companies avoid costly noncompliance fines and penalties.”
