A Captivating Account of the Siege of Leningrad

Author relives the life of survivors of the siege and writes a remarkably honest novel.

Washington, DC – WEBWIRE

“the best account of the siege they have ever read.”

The siege of Leningrad is documented as one of the longest and most destructive sieges of all time. These tumultuous times are told through the eyes of a child in Valery Petrochenkov’s book, Ash. The book was displayed in LitFire’s booth during the AJC Decatur Book Festival held in Atlanta last September 2–4, 2016.
Soviet propaganda has consistently played the events in Leningrad from 1941 to 1944 as the Russian people’s heroic resistance to Fascism, skating over the great suffering that the people of Leningrad endured. In this book, a child relays the events of the siege, his innocent and outright description unveiling the harsh realities of a city where bombs are regular, dead bodies are lined up on the street, and happiness is found in the most peculiar of places.
Ash is a bold and remarkable work that will delight history aficionados. The people who have read the original Russian version of the book say that it is “the best account of the siege they have ever read.”
