People can be exposed to particulate matter pollution in the air they breathe in their homes, schools and work environments. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes particulate matter, also referred to as PM, as a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets found in the air.

Some particles can be large or dark enough to be seen with the naked eye, such as dust, dirt, soot or smoke. Many others are so small they can only be detected using advanced laboratory equipment or sensitive air monitoring instruments.

Exposure to such particulates can affect both the lungs and the heart according to the EPA. People with heart or lung diseases, children and older adults are most likely to be affected by exposure. The EPA states that numerous scientific studies have linked exposure to a variety of health issues, including premature death in people with heart or lung disease; nonfatal heart attacks; irregular heartbeat; aggravated asthma; decreased lung function; and increased respiratory symptoms, such as irritation of the airways, coughing or difficulty breathing.

“Particulate exposure risks and sources can come from both indoor and outdoor environments,” said Jody Thomason, Vice President of Products/Corporate Purchasing for EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Exposure to some types of particulates in the work environment are regulated and companies that do not protect their workers can be subject to significant fines. At EMSL, we offer particulate matter analyses using electron microscopes and other advanced instrumentation. For monitoring in the field, EMSL’s Products Division offers the industry’s leading particle counters and other air testing equipment for sale and rental.”

EMSL also recently sponsored an online video about particulate matter pollution and exposure concerns that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/qBGvPZlucLA.
