“This would be an excellent resource for middle school American history classes, giving a boy’s-eye view of the Civil War and reminding students that kids their own age were caught up in active duty during the war.”

LitFire Publishing participated in the annual Frankfurt Book Fair held from October 19 to 23, 2016, at Messe Frankfurt (Frankfurt Trade Fair) in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. One of the featured books was J. Arthur Moore’s Journey Into Darkness (2nd Edition): A Story in Four Parts.

As a young boy growing up during the Civil War, Duane Kinkade faces many hardships and trials. He loses his mother at one point, being seriously wounded himself, and watches friends die on the battlefield. At the age of eleven, he leaves home in search of his father, becomes part of the war for two-and-a-half years, spends time in each of the two armies, having friends in each, and finally reunites with his father through the help of his Union friends.

According to BlueInk Review, “This would be an excellent resource for middle school American history classes, giving a boy’s-eye view of the Civil War and reminding students that kids their own age were caught up in active duty during the war.”

The book is heartfelt and relatable, although set in wildly different times. Civil War buffs will love the telling of a child’s story in this four-part book series.
