Attorney Stephen G. Cobb Uses Cutting Edge Neurological Research to Defend Clients

Today, it was announced that the Fort Walton Beach criminal defense attorney Stephen G. Cobb was selected as one of the top 100 lawyers by the National Trial Lawyers, an exclusive and invitation-only organization, and he may just be one of their most controversial selections this year. Since 2006, Cobb has been a proponent of the utilization of neurology and brain imaging when trying criminal law cases. Cobb, who has been practicing criminal law since 1990, maintains the position that because many perpetrators are found to have abnormal brain scan results, crime is more of a medical dilemma than a moral one, and that focusing on the treatment rather than the punishment of the offender will be more effective in preventing future unlawfulness.

He is passionate about using brain imaging research to improve the criminal justice system and the future welfare of society in general, and explains, “only three things are needed to break the pattern of criminal behavior: an accurate patient-defendant diagnosis, customized treatment plans and patient-defendant accountability. Government sponsored treatment programs have high failure rates, because they skimp on the diagnostics and use a one-size-fits-all approach. Better psychological testing and brain imaging should be routine.” When asked about SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography), a brain imaging tool that Cobbs’ firm puts to use during the defense of its clients, he stated, “SPECT shocked me. Not a single healthy, normal range, patient-defendant brain image in over seven years. Not one.” 

Since brain abnormalities are often at play with criminal offenders and the brain is the organ responsible for human behavior, Cobb finds the notion that neuroscience has no forensic value absurd. He hopes that his persistent involvement of neurology in the court room will continue to be exemplary in and contributing to creating a foundational change in criminal law practices.
