EMSL’s Radiochemistry Laboratory offers testing services for radionuclides in food.
EMSL’s Radiological Laboratory Division now provides radionuclides in food analysis packages. Radionuclides can be either man-made or natural in the environment and can contaminate food. Long term effects of consuming food contaminated by radionuclides include gene mutation and cancer.
Common naturally occurring radionuclides in food are Potassium-40, Uranium-238, Radium-226 and their associated progeny. Man-made radionuclides such as Iodine-131, Cesium-134, Cesium-137, Strontium-90, Strontium-89 and Plutonium can also contaminate food.

The first package is Gamma Emitters Analysis by Gamma Spectroscopy which includes Cesium-134/137, Ruthenium – 103/106 and Iodine-131. The second package is Determination of Plutonium-238-239 and Americium-241 by Alpha Spectroscopy. The third package is analysis of Strontium-90 by Beta Counting.
