Author Talks Mental Illness in Collection of Short Fiction
Sheila Hinnenkamp promotes empathy to destigmatize mental illness
“I hope Journeys of the Mind will instill empathy in the readers towards those who are not classified as normal by society’s norms,”
Mental illness is not something to be ashamed of. It’s not contagious. Hinnenkamp’s Journey of the Mind tackles the stories of people dealing with different mental illnesses.
In Journeys of the Mind, Miss Hinnenkamp introduces readers to four characters who suffer from depression, delusions, dissociative identity disorder, Alzheimer’s, and codependency. She takes her audience into the minds of these characters and intentionally left the characters unnamed so that readers could identify them as someone in their lives.
“I hope Journeys of the Mind will instill empathy in the readers towards those who are not classified as normal by society’s norms,” says the author.
Journeys of the Mind was featured in LitFire’s booth during the AJC Decatur Book Festival held last September 2-4, 2016.
