Nostalgia, there is a history in that word. Laughter, tears, love, and fears all contained in bygone years.

Acclaimed photographer and social-change advocate Andrew Boyd’s book, Nostalgia, is a bit different from most of his published works. While he is popularly known for his photography books, this one is more of a memoir and personal retelling of what it was like to live in America from the 1930s to the 1950s.

Boyd begins the book with the quote “Nostalgia, there is a history in that word. Laughter, tears, love, and fears all contained in bygone years.” This encompasses the main point of the book: a trip down memory lane during what Boyd believes to be the most defining period in America—the time of the Second World War. It is during that time that Americans exhibited incomparable dignity and courage.
The book displays a general kind of longing for a time that has passed. It unravels Boyd’s sincere awe and yearning for the America after the war, and whether other people share the same insight that Boyd has or not, the book still succeeds in getting this message across.
With Boyd’s writing style and real-time photographs, the book will surely entertain readers. Nostalgia is recommended to anyone who enjoys history, memoirs, and poignant photographs.
