Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver Brings Families Together with Mid-Autumn Festival Afternoon Tea

WEBWIRE

In anticipation of the harvest season, Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver is celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival with a memorable afternoon tea on Sunday, September 18. Afternoon tea will be served on the sixth floor heated outdoor Terrace, the perfect urban oasis to enjoy a tea tower with loved ones.

Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the eight month of the Chinese calendar, when the moon is at its brightest. Mid-Autumn Festival has been celebrated since the early Tang dynasty (618-907), when families would gather to make offerings of gratitude for a plentiful harvest. Today it remains a significant family holiday, as loved ones reunite to share quality time together.

Executive Chef Ken Nakano and his team of expert pastry chefs have created a festive afternoon tea tower that incorporates many of the traditional foods that are consumed during Mid-Autumn Festival. Symbolic ingredients such as crab, duck, lotus root, taro, pear, and watermelon are very popular during the festival, often signifying luck, unity, happiness, good fortune and fertility.

The Mid-Autumn Afternoon Tea tower includes savoury items such as: BBQ Duck Salad Steam Bun; Dungeness Crab “Louis” on Gem Lettuce; Emperor Ham Sandwich with Pickled Lotus Root; and Warm Side Striped Shrimp Fritter with Water Chestnuts. Sweets include: White Chocolate Truffle with Jasmine Tea Ganache, Matcha Opera Cake with Golden Pearls, Five-Spice Shortbread and Pineapple Cream, and Mango Mousse with Coconut Tuile. Each tea tower also comes with a classic butter and raisin-infused scone, and a taro scone, with clotted cream and house made coconut jam. As a nod to the most important food tradition of Mid-Autumn Festival, each table served during afternoon tea will receive one mooncake to go, to share with friends and family.

Mid-Autumn Afternoon Tea is available exclusively on Sunday, 18 September 2016, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and is priced at CAD 60 per person. Children’s Afternoon Tea is available for guests 10 years and under, for CAD 30 per person. Advanced reservations required.
