Former Mentally-Ill Writer Shares Her Road to Recovery in a Memoir
Susan Cane writes about her experiences and challenges while moving on from her mental illness.
“Each story represents a different encounter. Some originates from memories of the past. But, as I meet new encounters, my life begins to change. And I prosper in ways that a person with a mental illness doesn’t,”
Mental illness affects a person’s mood, thinking and behavior. Notably, people suffering from mental illness experience shame, discrimination and eventually have become socially isolated.
Book author Susan Cane have undergone the same experience and strived to change the course of her life. “From One Encounter to the Next” is a compilation of poetry and short stories capturing Cane’s daily combat with mental illness, and her reflections to be understood and to put an end to the harsh judgment of people about the disease.
Inspired by her experience, Cane wrote this book as a reflection of her daily struggle to function normally, fit in and get accepted by the society. In her progressive recovery, Cane seeks to be understood and objects to destroy the stigma heavily associated with the disease.
“Each story represents a different encounter. Some originates from memories of the past. But, as I meet new encounters, my life begins to change. And I prosper in ways that a person with a mental illness doesn’t,” said Cane in her book.
Written with a touch of personal experience, this book is intended to bring about inspiration, optimism, and change to the lives of people who are suffering from mental illness. It is also for the people who want to learn and understand the struggles. At the same time, it serves as an eye-opener to everyone about facing and accepting the disease with patience, love, and hope, destroying the heavy stigma it carries.
