In March, the Los Angeles Times published a report about the current situation surrounding the ongoing lead and arsenic contamination concerns caused by a closed battery recycling plant in Vernon, California.

The article described Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s recent efforts in the neighboring communities to inform residents about possible hazardous materials that were emitted into the air by the recycling facility over its many years of operation. California’s Governor, Jerry Brown, also recently requested that the state legislature fund over $175 million to conduct testing and cleanup activities to remove contamination from thousands of homes, schools and nearby businesses.

Since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that no safe blood lead level in children has been identified and that lead exposure can affect nearly every system in the body, many residents have had their blood tested by the Los Angeles County Department of Health. The other major exposure concern for people in the surrounding communities is arsenic. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has classified inorganic arsenic as a human carcinogen.

“These latest developments in and around Vernon are good news for area residents,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “People concerned about potential exposure to lead and arsenic that may have settled on their property or in their schools and businesses can turn to LA Testing. We offer quick and affordable lead and arsenic testing services and sampling supplies. There is also an easy-to-use home test kit to sample for lead in dust.”

LA Testing has sponsored educational videos about lead poisoning and arsenic exposure risks. These videos can be seen at:
