New Rule Released to Protect Against Crystalline Silica in the Workplace
EMSL Analytical offers testing services to help companies comply with the OSHA’s new silica ruling.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) released a new two standard rule to help protect workers from exposure to respirable crystalline silica. By limiting workers exposure to respirable crystalline silica, workers reduce the risk of lung cancer, silicosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and kidney disease. The standards are broken into one for Construction and one for General Industry and Maritime. Both standards will take effect starting June 23, 2016. Industries then have one to five years to fully comply with requirements, depending on the industry.
Crystalline silica is a mineral commonly found in sand, stone, rock, concrete, brick, block or mortar. Workers are exposed to crystalline silica dust in many daily operations like cutting, sawing, drilling or crushing components that contain crystalline silica. With the new rule, OSHA has created key provisions to help save over 600 lives annually by decreasing diseases related to exposure.
Several industries are affected by the new rule. These include construction, glass manufacturing, pottery products, structural clay products, concrete products, foundries, dental laboratories, paintings and coatings, jewelry production, refractory products, ready-mix concrete, cut stone and stone products, abrasive blasting in maritime, construction and general industry, refractory furnace installation and repair, railroad transportation, and oil and gas operations.
“Diseases associated with exposure to crystalline silica are completely preventable,” said Michael Menz, CIH, Environmental Training Manager at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “At EMSL, we help companies comply with regulations and support their efforts to protect workers from exposure through testing services for crystalline silica and other potentially hazardous materials.”
EMSL provides air and bulk sample analyses using NIOSH Method 7500, NIOSH Method 7501 and OSHA Method ID-142. They also recently sponsored an educational video about silicosis and crystalline silica that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/gLfsdhB2bz8.
