In late January, the GazetteXtra published a report about an increase in cases of shigellosis that have been linked to a daycare center in Walworth County, Wisconsin. The article states that the county has already confirmed 14 cases of the infection with several more potential cases still pending. The daycare center was not identified by state officials, but is said to be cooperating with healthcare officials.

The news report also indicated that each year the Department of Health Services in Wisconsin typically sees around 300 to 400 cases of shigellosis. It is a diarrheal disease caused by a group of bacteria known as Shigella. The bacteria is found in the stools of infected persons while they have diarrhea and for up to a week or two after the diarrhea has gone away.

Shigella is very contagious and exposure to even a tiny amount of contaminated fecal matter can cause infection. Transmission occurs when people put something in their mouths or swallow something that has come into contact with the stool of an infected person. Most infected people develop diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps starting a day or two after they are exposed. Shigellosis usually resolves in five to seven days, and some people who are infected may have no symptoms at all, but may still pass the bacteria on to others.

“This highly infectious disease can quickly spread from toddler to toddler in daycare settings,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “In order to stop its spread, it’s crucial that people thoroughly wash their hands and that surfaces are cleaned and disinfected. In addition to daycare centers, outbreaks of shigellosis have occurred in restaurants, schools, nursing homes and prisons.”

To help identify this microbial pathogen, EMSL Analytical offers rapid qPCR testing services and sampling supplies. Environmental testing of surfaces, food and water can pinpoint the source of an outbreak to help prevent others from becoming infected. Testing is also instrumental for confirming disinfection procedures.  EMSL has also sponsored an online video about Shigella and shigellosis from contaminated environments that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/FI6nC5zZMZc.
