Introducing ‘Studio’ by Legacy Republic: The First Portable Photo Album Scanner For On-Demand Digitization

Innovative hardware meets social-selling market with iPhone-based 3D scanner to take on $56 billion industry

Santa Clara, California – WEBWIRE

Legacy Republic, the only mission-driven company combining the power of social selling with creating digital family legacies via personal videos and photo albums, today announced the launch of Studio, the first portable album scanner that uses 3D scanning technology to simplify and transform traditional photo scanning techniques.

Here’s a video of how Studio works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecfRMfxYEyI

Designed by Legacy Republic’s Chief Technology Officer Andy Choi, Studio is a sleek, portable scanner created to arm Legacy Makers (Legacy Republic independent consultants and the company’s driving force) in their mission to save irreplaceable pre-digital family memories. By bringing the digitization process into Legacy Makers’ homes, Studio expedites the transfer of an estimated one billion photo albums and scrapbooks -- a $56 billion problem -- while also supporting Legacy Makers’ small business endeavors.

Now, instead of hauling photo albums and scrapbooks to store kiosks where scanning individual photos takes hours and quality is at risk, anyone looking to access their photo albums online can easily do so with the help of their local Legacy Maker. Legacy Makers can quickly scan and digitize albums within minutes, using Studio and the supporting iPhone app, from the convenience of their home, a friend’s house, or at any Legacy Republic Show.

“Photo album and scrapbook scanning makes up a significant percent of our Legacy Makers’ business, and Studio will accommodate this growing demand, simplify the scanning process and improve the overall quality of digitized content,” says Head of Legacy Republic Brian Knapp. “Our team essentially transformed outmoded scanning technology into a portable, mobile solution, so that Legacy Makers are better equipped to provide their customers with access to their memories online, without ever having to part with their most precious family heirlooms.”

Unlike traditional scanners, Legacy Republic’s Studio scans albums with a 3D laser and creates a 3D model so the pages can be virtually flattened. It then removes shadows and other artifacts caused by textured paper and deteriorated protective plastic sheets, producing an even higher quality photo replica than before.

Upholding Legacy Republic’s mission to protect and share family memories, Studio features:

  • 3D Laser Scanning and Self-Adjusting LED Lights: Scans albums with a 3D laser and eight self-adjusting LED lights to create a 3D model so that the pages can be virtually flattened.

  • High Quality Digital Images: Captures eight images at 12 megapixels for 96 megapixels of scan data that is fused with the 3D model of the pages via proprietary algorithms to create a final 20-megapixel archival image.

  • Mobile App: Leverages the iPhone 6S 12 megapixel camera to develop Legacy Republic’s patent-pending technology, all while being controlled by the supporting iPhone app.

  • Portability and Fast Setup: Comes self-contained in an attractive lightweight and portable case. Setup takes less than three minutes and is easily adjustable to accommodate small to large albums, up to 14”x14”.

  • Clarity: Removes shadows and other artifacts caused by textured paper and deteriorating protective plastic sheets that are usually found on aging photo albums and scrapbooks, resulting in a higher quality image.

  • eBook: Scans are stitched together into an eBook, allowing the family album to be shared easily with new generations.

  • Social Sharing & Private Cloud Account: Publishes the digitized photo album images onto a USB flash drive and uploads them to a private cloud account. From there, customers can view within the Family Legacy app, share via email or on Facebook, or add these memories to their FamilySearch account.

“As safe and secure as our shipping processes are, there are still customers out there who just don’t feel comfortable parting with their photo albums,” said Legacy Maker Debbie McNulty. “With Studio, we bring the digitization process to them where they can watch the whole process right in their living room.”
