Cougar Vineyard and Winery, a boutique winery specializing in Italian varietal wines, hosted its first ever “Cougar Meets Italy” event on the evening of Thursday, January 21, 2016.
Cougar Vineyard and Winery, a boutique winery specializing in Italian varietal wines, hosted its first ever Cougar Meets Italy event on the evening of Thursday, January 21, 2016. During this event professional wine judges compared Cougar wines with DOC and DOCG rated Italian wines through a blind tasting using the UC Davis 20 Point System. There were over 60 people in attendance at the event who were given the opportunity to judge the same wines using the UC Davis System.
The basis for this event is the movie, “Bottle Shock” which is based on the Judgement of Paris wine judging event that took place in 1976.
During the Cougar event, a four-course wine and food paired meal was served by Francesca’s Italian Kitchen of Temecula, CA. The food courses were paired with the same Cougar varietal wines that were judged during the competition: 2014 Falanghina, 2013 Sangiovese, 2012 Montepulciano and 2009 Aglianico.
After the delicious meal was served, the wine judging results were publicly disclosed. Following are the highlights:
- Cougar was awarded top honors for its 2014 Falanghina against two distinguished Italian rivals; including the vineyard from which Cougar derived the cuttings for the establishment of its own Falanghina grape vines.
- Cougar also won People’s Choice Awards for its Sangiovese, Montepulciano and Aglianico wines. These awards were determined by compiling the judging results from the audience members.
Professional wine judges for this event were Rich Cook, Marilyn Sherman, Kevin Walsh and Dr. John Piconi. They were joined by Pete Anderson, an Italian grape and wine expert from Carlsbad, CA.
